It’s 5pm on Monday.
I’m sick. Emily’s sick. Judah is getting over being sick.
I’ve gotten about ZERO things done today on my ever-growing “to-do” list. And this is not due to lack of effort, but rather to the many (seemingly urgent) distractions that have popped up throughout my day.
I’ve finally sat down to write this blog (which is due tomorrow) and now Judah (my two year old) is coming up to me, with all the sweetness, wanting to give me hugs and feeling cuddly. Who can resist!? Hold on…I’ll be right back…
Also, one of my goals for this New Year is to get more organized and systematic with my “to-do” list. During our many road-trips across the country, Emily and I are even listening to a book together on how to better accomplish all the things we want/need to accomplish.
In short, I’m overwhelmed.
I feel like I’m already failing at what I would like to accomplish.
I’m getting frustrated and anxious.
And in God’s humorous providence and sovereignty I have on my schedule to write a blog about “running our race and enduring with joy.”
Though I was supposed to write this blog sometime last week, I’m glad that it hasn’t gotten done till now. I’m thankful for the reminder to breathe and set my eyes on Jesus because, frankly, I need it!
Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus… Hebrews 12:1-2
Why am I encouraged to breathe? And what does it mean for me to set my eyes on Jesus?
Well, God’s Word has a way of helping me with perspective. It renews my mind. It reminds me that the things that seem so overwhelming in the moment aren’t really that overwhelming in light of a greater reality. His Word stirs up gratitude in my heart, realigning my priorities and my heart.
Through His Word, I hear the Holy Spirit whisper to me, “just keep running. Run towards my faithfulness and run toward cultivating it in yourself. Run towards greater faith, trust, and obedience. Run towards ME. Come, know Me. Seek Me. Find Me. Abide in Me. Come and be like Me. Run your race. Endure. Don’t get thrown off course when life doesn’t go your way.”
All of the sudden, peace.
Things still need to get done. The full-force of life’s demands hasn’t let up. But I have peace all the same.
In fact, I’m energized to tackle what I can and I’ve gained the inner freedom and grace to let go of the things that just simply won’t get done today.
Maybe you’re already overwhelmed too?
Maybe you’re tempted to feel like a failure?
Don’t give up. Keep running.
And I’m not talking about running at your to-do list…
Keep running after the abundant life that Jesus promises. The inner abundant life that isn’t based your circumstances. The inner abundant life that seeks FIRST the Kingdom believing that all things will be added. (Matthew 6:33)
We all fail at times. And I have yet to meet a person who makes the claim to a trouble free life.
His grace really does offer you ANOTHER re-do buttonMaybe you need to take the time to stop and refocus your eyes on Jesus in hopes of getting better perspective? Or maybe you need to get up, look to Jesus, and realize that His grace really does offer you ANOTHER re-do button?
I’m not sure, but I just want to encourage you to do what you need to do in order to endure. Press in. Keep going. Keep trying. Don’t give up!
Throughout the year let’s just keep stirring each other up (Matthew 10:24) cheering each other along! We all need a cheerleader from time to time.
This year, let’s run like we’ve never run before.
