Our Tears, Your Spring Water

Pass along this post!

Sometimes we find ourselves in the valley.

We can get anxious, fearful, and even depressed. Sometimes life lets us down and the disappointments are hard to stomach. And sometimes all of this heaviness keeps us from connecting with our Lord the way we long to. It’s not the most pleasant thing to admit, but it’s the truth.

Thankfully the Word of God has plenty of resources for these inner valleys. Thankfully we aren’t the first to fight through the frustration of being stuck in a pit and longing, but failing, to climb out of its depths.

Thankfully, this is not our home.

As we began writing for this upcoming EP, our desire was to write “fun” songs. Earlier this year we discovered some music by a group called “Us The Duo” and listened to their album on repeat for weeks. Many home dance parties have occurred while listening to their music. I have the videos to prove it.

That’s the kind of music we wanted to make! Music that makes people want to dance and celebrate! Music that helps us all ENJOY life. That is, after all, the Martin family word for the year!

But that’s just not where the Lord led us and that’s not what we ended up writing.

Let me back up just a bit.

Our goal was/is to make 4 EPs total (we are releasing #3 soon!) and a few years ago we titled the whole collection The Overflow Project. It has ended up being a apt title because all the songs so far are truly an overflow of where the Word of God is speaking into our life experiences. The most recent EP has proved to be no different.

Over the last year or so, we have been a rough season. I don’t want to be dramatic. There aren’t many external circumstances that we can point to and say, “that was awful.” A lot of what we were experiencing was internal weariness, frustrations, disappointments, and depression.

There were many long talks full of many tears as we tried our best to walk together through the fog of the valley.

Happy are the people whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a source of spring water.Psalm 84:5-6

The Valley of Baca can be translated as, the Valley of Tears.

We were walking through a valley of tears and during that time the Word of God was speaking and colliding into our experiences.

It was not a time of grand discovery and insight. It was a season of mimicking in faith what we saw in the Word.

We didn’t think we would write songs from this place because we didn’t think we had anything to offer…we were just trying to get through it.
Several months and five fully developed songs later, we came across Psalm 84:5-6. That was a full-circle kind of day. It was a, “Oh! okay! I get it now!” kind of day. It was a, “wow! God is so faithful!” kind of day.

The Lord faithfully helped us walk through a valley and ended up turning it into a source of spring water. These songs and scriptures have been refreshing to us and we are anxious to share them with you because we believe that they will be refreshing to you as well.

The Lord is our strength and our hearts are set on pilgrimage. This is NOT our home!

Thanks for journeying with us!
