A well-timed help

I’m not sure about you, but distraction comes in many forms for me.

As a young mom, I often think that I would spend more time in the Word if I just had a morning without the kids or more time with a little less on my plate.

But honestly, I find that the battle to be actively engaged instead of passively preoccupied in my life is always fiercest when I have perfectly quiet moments right in front of me.

Last week I had a rare morning with extra space and fewer distractions.

Our oldest kids were away at “Papa and Tante camp,” Jonathan was manning an early soundcheck. It was just me and my two-year-old, Milo, who was playing happily on the floor with Legos.

I had a prime opportunity to spend some uninterrupted time in the Word.

Our team is going through a study in the Psalms, and I had already finished my reading for the week. Instead of spending time in the Word, I distracted myself by answering emails, checking social media, and responding to texts.

That’s when the Lord convicted and called me to spend time with Him even if I had finished my “required reading.”

As I made my heart available for the Lord to speak to me, He refreshed my heart and brought many dear friends to my mind — friends who need a reminder that the Lord is with them in the darkness they’re facing.

I was led to pray for these friends. After my time of prayer, I grabbed for my phone again, not to kill time, chase some aimless sense of productivity, or silence my restlessness, but to send words of encouragement to the friends that the Lord put on my heart, trusting the Holy Spirit to speak as only He can.

Moments like this remind me of a verse in Hebrews,

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
— Hebrews 4:16

That well-timed help is often both for ourselves and the good of those around us.

If you are dragging your feet or spinning your wheels today, don’t delay, friend. Look to Jesus, open His Word, let Him fill you up, and make you a cup that overflows to others today.
